John's Stack of Stuff

Notes on the Tamiya Modern New Jersey 1:350

The Tamiya modern New Jersey is an excelent kit. As with all, there is room for improvement. This page discusses some of the issues.

Inaccuracies

  • Missing the prominent stern doors for towed decoy

  • Anchor chain path is straight rather than curved at the fore end

  • Front of the breakwater is vertical rather than slanted.

  • Shape of the hull is incorrect. Should be slimmer at the bow and tapered rather than curved towards aft

  • There should be no anchor chain plates. The Iowas did not need them since the anchor chain path does not run through the wood-covered area of the deck (as, e.g. on the North Carolinas). The molded on plates are painted rather than elevated.

  • Chocks should be flush with the edge of the hull rather than recessed.

  • The helipad should be elevated above the wood areas after and the narrow strip forward.

  • The deck areas forward of the helipad on either side of the wood area are ramps up to the helipad.

  • The command antenna at the bow is missing four support struts.

  • The rudders should be inboard of the skegs rather than aligned with them.

  • The paravane chain opening in the bow should have lips.

  • The bucklers on the 16" guns are not well shapped.

  • The upper boat in each stack should be suspended from the davit. They do not rest on the deck below.

  • There should be a connector at the fore end of the exposed propeller shafts.

  • The junction of the outer propeller shafts to the hull is incorrect.

  • Aft deck detail is incorrect. Note the absence of the  project at the aft end of the starboard helipad edge and the lack of teh projections on the helipad.

  • There should only be 6 vertical drain piples on either side of the ship.

Painting Instructions

  • The muzzles of the chaff dispensers and tomahawk launcher should be gray rather than red.

  • The ramps leading from the deck up to the helipad should be the same color as the deck and helipad.

Notes

  • The nets around the helipad should be lowered if there is a helicopter on deck.

If You Think I'm Picking on Tamiya

Don't get me started on it's only competition from Revell Germany.
